I'm at the foot of the Continental Divide, in a town stripped of its gold, and its lead. Mule deer meander through town, browsing unguarded gardens and shrubs. The Salmon river attracts myriad birds. Each morning, the heron fly from their rookery to downstream fishing grounds. The dippers and pigeons line up along streams. Robins and starlings chase one another away from deer pies loaded with insects. Lazuli buntings and Cedar waxwings visit the flowering trees. By afternoon, the osprey lunge for steelhead or salmon and the golden eagles gain loft to hunt across the valley. In the evening, the herons return home. The turkey vultures whirl overhead, searching for fresh roadkill. The turtle dove announces itself over, and over, and over again. All day a girl rides her bicycle up and down the alley, past the porch. Soon, the tourists will come.
